MCKENNA'S PLACE BECOMES REALITY THROUGH EFFORTS OF COMMUNITY
Exeter, PA – The local community rallied together recently to help celebrate the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of Mckenna’s Place, an ADA compliant playground built by the Wyoming Area Kiwanis Club, located on the corner of Hoover and Thomas Streets in Exeter.
The playground was inspired by Mckenna Granahan, who is diagnosed with Pallister-Killian Syndrome, and whose family wanted a place where both children with disabilities and able-bodied children could play safely. There were no handicapped accessible playgrounds in the immediate area until Mckenna’s Place came to fruition.
The Kiwanis Club, who strives to improve the world one child and one community at a time, led the fundraising efforts on behalf of Mckenna’s Place. Through their efforts and determination, five-year-old Mckenna can now grow and play alongside of her big sister, Emma, without care.
Rep. Phyllis Mundy helped to secure recreation grant monies for the project and members of the Exeter Borough Council including Mayor Cassandra Coleman donated the park to refurbish. With the help of local community benefactors including Pride Mobility, Keystone Automotive, the Exeter Lions Club, David. R. Balent Construction Co., and many more, what started as a dream became a reality.
“With our products specifically serving those with disabilities, Mckenna's Place was an especially poignant project for our family of employees at Pride,” explains Mark E. Smith, Consumer Research/Market Outreach Manager. “We know first-hand of the importance of children of all abilities to lead inclusive lives within their communities, and we have been privileged to support
Mckenna's Place, a fully-accessible, inclusive park here in our neighborhood. Mckenna's Place allows kids to be kids, regardless of disability – and that's a wonderful achievement.”
The Kiwanis Club is still accepting donations to purchase additional equipment for Mckenna’s Place, including benches and a gazebo. Donations can be sent to: Wyoming Area Kiwanis, PO Box 4052, Wyoming, PA 18644.
