Preparing a Justification Statement

Government funding programs typically require an applicant to complete a justification statement.  This is best done with the aid of your physician, therapist or rehabilitation professional.  The statement indicates the detailed medical necessity of the purchase, particularly for moving around within the home.

State vocational rehabilitation agencies normally insist that anyone applying for funds must be able to clearly demonstrate that the service or technology will enhance their ability to prepare for, get, or keep a job.  If your focus is not on obtaining a job, then the justification statement must show that the device will improve the individual’s ability to function independently.

Often local school districts will pay for devices and auxiliary aids used in the classroom. However, parents must first be prepared to demonstrate how the device will enhance their child’s ability to obtain an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment possible.

Remember:  Overall success in securing funding is frequently dependent on the applicant’s ability to address each agency’s unique requirements in a funding request.
